ROAD BINDERS

Soil treatment techniques involving the incorporation of hydraulic binders in the ground in situ, are being widely developed around the world for economic and environmental reasons. The use of metakaolin combined with limestone (and/or cement) offers a road binder which can be used as a perfect substitute for cement binders, at a competitive price.



The benefits of Flash metakaolin in road binders :
Improvement in the cost to the environment in comparison with existing binders,
A longer window of use than traditional binders (a more « level » Proctor curve).

Argeco Développement, subsidiary of Demeter Technologies, distributes three road binders made with Flash metakaolin :
          • Argiliant / Argiliant+ : hydraulic roadt binder
          • Argistab : hydraulic binder for the treatment of hydraulic bank gravel and sand
          • Argichaux : hydraulic binder to improve the load bearing capacity of a floor


Argiliant / Argiliant+

To satisfy the growing needs of civil engineering for high performing hydraulic binders, Argeco Développement (subsidiary of Demeter Technologies) is producing and commercialising a new generation of hydraulic pozzolanic binders : Argiliant.
Argiliant is principally composed of a pozzolan, Argicem (obtained through Flash calcination of a natural kaolin clay) as well as quick lime and cement.

Argiliant is a binder which is perfectly adapted to road construction, whether on site or at a plant, in the following areas :
work on embankments and subgrades,
road maintenance,
processing of bank gravel.

Argiliant+ has the same characteristics as Argiliant hydraulic binder whilst offering superior mechanical performance.

The setting and the development of mechanical linkages are due to the hydraulic properties of metakaolin in the presence of limestone. In order to speed up the setting process and to allow a swift reopening of roads under maintenance to traffic, a Portland cement is added to the mixture.

The use of Argiliant road binder leads to some significant advantages :
Argiliant offers similar performance to that of traditional hydraulic binders,
The environmental cost of Argiliant is considerably better than traditional roadt binders : the production of a tonne of Argicem only releases 90 kilos of CO2,
Economically, Argiliant is cheaper than traditional road binders,
Argiliant offers better ease of use : Argiliant is more tolerant to variations in ground humidity levels than traditional binders.

Areas of application for soil treatment
The level of success achieved is dependent on the nature of the ground. A laboratory study makes it possible to define the dose ratio in the binding. As a general rule, this proportion is between 4 and 7% depending on the mechanical class required.

The pozzolanic character of the binding lengthens the time when it remains manageable, compared to that of cement, thus improving its usability on site.

Areas of application for processing bank gravel
Argiliant enables the production of stabilised gravel and sand. The proportions used are determined for each aggregate by a study, and are around the same as those of bindings with a clinker base.

Argistab

To satisfy the growing needs of architects and landscapers  for high performing hydraulic bindings, which are both environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing, Argeco Développement (subsidiary of Demeter Technologies) is producing and commercialising a new generation of hydraulic, pozzolanic bindings to stabilise sand and gravel : Argistab.

The pozzolan used, Argicem, is obtained by Flash calcination of natural, kaolin clay to obtain metakaolin. This new calcination process, which is low in energy consumption and CO2 emissions is a positive example of sustainable development.

Stabilisation of sand
Argistab is a binding, which is highly adapted to the stabilisation of 0/4, 0/6 mm1 and fine sands. Its original composition, a mixture of hydrated lime and metakaolin, preserves the natural character of sand, whilst giving it the mechanical properties necessary to resist weathering as well as light traffic.

Argistab is an hydraulic binder :
aesthetically, it gives to sands a stone-like quality thanks to its pinkish colour,
cin terms of comfort, it gives a pleasing suppleness to streets thanks to its low elasticity modulus,
resistance : it leads to improved performance of the hydraulic binding in terms of standing up to the elements and mechanical wear.

Treated bank gravel
Argistab is also used for the treatment of gravel as a substitute for more traditional hydraulic bindings. It allows us to obtain mechanical class T2/T3 at a ratio of 5%. The elasticity is considerably lower than that produced using other bindings, which gives the material a reduced tendency to crack as a result of hydraulic shrinkage.

Areas of application
The sands stabilised by Argistab blend well into the environment because they have a similar appearance to the natural materials. They are resistant to light or occasional traffic.
Argistab is used for pedestrian zones, cycle tracks, town squares, playgrounds and private driveways as well as all kinds of urban developments.

Argistab may be used in the stabilisation of clays used in mud-bricks used for the construction of buildings (supporting walls, partition walls).

Argichaux

To respond to the growing needs within civil engineering, for high performing and environmentally friendly hydraulic bindings, Argeco Développment (a subsidiary company of Demeter Technologies) is producing and commercialising a new generation of pozzolanic hydraulic bindings : Argichaux.
An ecological solution to soil treatment, Argichaux is a binding, which is designed to deal with road maintenance, as an on-site technique to build embankments and to improve the last layer of embankment.

Argichaux is mainly composed of a pozzolan, Argicem (obtained by Flash calcination of natural, kaolin clay) as well as limestone.

Areas of application
Argichaux is generally used as a substitute for quick lime in treatments intended for industrial platforms, car-parks and small roads. Argichaux gradually dries out ground which is too damp and neutralises clay soils, with a pozzolanic effect which gives the ground greater weight bearing capacity, as well as water resistance.
